New Year – New You? Creating Successful Resolutions

Dr. Debra Mandel, author of the new book Sassy and Rude: Her New Attitude, provides some helpful tips on how to set realistic goals for 2024.

Many of us get super excited and motivated toward the end of the year, making promises to ourselves and others for long lasting change in the year to come. And some start out with a bang. But more often for most of us, by the end of January or somewhere in February our momentum peters out and we find ourselves back in the same rut with the same old patterns.

Dr. Debra Mandel understands this. An upbeat and compassionate psychologist, and author of five books including her new book, Sassy and Rude: Her New Attitude, Dr. Mandel has expertise in improving relationships, depression, anxiety and general life concerns. Let her your audience learn how to create manageable resolutions and expectations to achieve real success in efforts at self-improvement.

Dr. Mandel joins us now to provide some helpful advice on creating and succeeding with our resolutions and bringing in a positive outlook for the New Year, as well as discuss her new book.

Q&A:

  1. Name some examples of unrealistic resolutions people often make and how to make those more workable. For example, dropping 10 pounds, quitting drinking or smoking, becoming a better friend, working less overtime etc.?
  2. How can we create realistic, achievable goals?
  3. How can we measure our success?
  4. What types of psychological or emotional conditions interfere with achieving these goals?
  5. Is it better to make our resolutions quietly to ourselves or to share with others for inspiration?
  6. How can we recharge our batteries to get back on track?
  7. What are the post-holiday blues? Do you have some tips that would help people prevent or beat the blues?
  8. If you experienced any rifts in your close personal relationships before or during the holidays—what can you do to mend them? And what if you were the one who acted inappropriately?
  9. Mandel has written a number of books based around scenarios such as these. Her latest book, Sassy and Rude: Her New Attitude, is doing quite well and takes a closer look at how to relate with adult daughters, and the “tough love” approach needed to mend those fences. How can mothers and daughter use the new year as motivation to build a better relationship?
  10. Your main theme in the book is for people to understand where they have control and where they don’t and about personal accountability. Can you explain more? And while your target readers are mothers and daughter, and can these concepts apply to other close personal relationships? (e.g. father son or daughter, mother/son, intimate partners?)
  11. Where can we learn more about you, your psychology practice, and your books?
