The Lasting Effect of a Devastating Shooting, Especially During the Holidays (Guest: Dr. Debra Mandel)

The author of Sassy and Rude: Her New Attitude discusses the tragedy that resulted in the deaths of three people on campus.

Things are already pretty rough this holiday season with a growing inflation and questionable politics. But now, a shooting that has left three people dead is leaving many feeling devastated.

The shooting took place at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas yesterday. The police were able to kill the suspect before he could hurt anyone else. But the real question is what kind of effect this will have on friends and family of the deceased, as well as other students on campus.

“No student should have to fear pursuing their dreams on a college campus,” noted Sheriff Kevin McMahill in a news conference, referring to the incident as “a heinous, unforgivable crime.”

Dr. Debra Mandel understands just what people go through from a loss such as this. “The UNLV shooting can have far-reaching traumatizing effects on the mental health of, not only the students on campus, but also on their families and friends. And with the holidays upon us, those affected need support and tools for how to prevent excessive stress or PTSD and ideally be able to preserve enjoyable time together,” she noted.

An expert on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Mandel also has a firm understanding of how a family can cope with traumatic situations, as she notes in her new book, Sassy and Rude: Her New Attitude. Mandel joins us now to discuss this matter further.
