What Are Some Tips To Help Overcome Rough Situations With Families During the Holidays? (Guest: Dr. Debra Mandel)

Dr. Debra Mandel, author of the new book Sassy and Rude: Her New Attitude, provides some helpful tips to get over the holiday doldrums.

While the holidays can bring out a mood of festivity in most people, it can also…bring out the worst.

This is mainly due to stress, which can come from pretty much anywhere these days. Whether it’s something that’s happening in the world, or just general tension within a family or friend circles, stress can pop up and make the holidays feel like they’re dragging on.

Dr. Debra Mandel understands this. An upbeat and compassionate psychologist, Mandel has written a number of books based around scenarios such as these. Her latest, Sassy and Rude: A New Attitude, takes a closer look at how to relate with adult daughters, and the “tough love” approach needed to mend those fences.

Dr. Mandel joins us now to provide some helpful holiday advice, as well as discuss her new book.

Q&A:

  1. Where do you think the most stress comes from when it comes to families over the holidays? Unwanted guests? Unexpected surprises, like an engagement announcement? Something else?
  2. What would happen if stressful situations such as this are allowed to boil over? Yelling matches? People storming out? Perhaps worse?
  3. With that, do you have some tips that would help people get through the holidays?
  4. What’s a good stress reliever? Going for a walk to “clear the tension” and maybe think things through? A board game? Something else?
  5. What motivated you to put your pen to paper when it comes to writing your books?
  6. Your latest book, Sassy and Rude: Her New Attitude, is doing quite well. Tell us more about it and what prompted you to write it.
  7. What’s the best overall tip you can give to those that are having it rough during the holiday season?
