The Second Amendment Foundation Is Ready To Challenge a Potential Federal Ban On “Assault Weapons”

A spokesman for the group explains why they’re more than ready to take on Charles Schumer’s proposed law.

It appears that anti-gun representative Sen. Charles Schumer is set to move on a new bill that could bring a federal ban on “assault weapons.” Republicans previously objected to the bill, S. 25, when Schumer tried to make movement on it before. But it appears he’s preparing a new push behind it.

With that, the Second Amendment Foundation, a group that firmly believes in the right for all to bear arms, is ready to act. “If Schumer tries to run it as an amendment to another bill, or move it via the regular process, we will take action,” noted SAF Founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb in a statement.

Adam Kraut, the Executive Director for the group, added, “We have eight pending challenges to state laws banning modern semiautomatic rifles, and we absolutely will challenge a federal ban should one pass. Aside from the fact that such a ban would be unconstitutional, there is no conclusive research showing that such a ban would actually prevent violent crimes, including mass shootings.”

Gottlieb continued, “Chuck Schumer has been trying to ban guns since he arrived on Capitol Hill decades ago. For him and Joe Biden, achieving a total ban on an entire class of firearms would be a symbolic victory, but completely lacking in substance because violent crime will continue, and all Schumer would do is demand a ban on another class of firearms, to create the false impression he is ‘doing something’ about gun-related violent crime.”

A representative for the group joins us now to discuss it further.

Q&A:

  1. Why is Chuck Schumer so driven to getting a bill for banning “assault weapons” passed? Does he really believe that’s the answer to the increase in crime in this country?
  2. Even if Schumer were successful calling for the ban, wouldn’t people still be able to get assault weapons online anyway? Or through other means?
  3. Why doesn’t Schumer – and for that matter, President Biden – consider alternative solutions? For instance, the Concealed-Carry/Constitutional-Carry initiative that you have been in approval of?
  4. Do you believe issues surrounding guns and “assault weapons” could play heavily into next year’s Presidential Election?
  5. Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation?
