Fuel prices continue to soar to new heights, with no reported end in sight as the summer days begin. However, President Joe Biden has proposed a Federal Gas Tax Holiday that could provide relief…that is, if it passes.
Biden noted, “Well, I hope I have a decision based on the data I’m looking for by the end of the week.” That means he still has yet to finalize the tax, which could provide relief on gas prices before they rise to a national $5 or higher across the United States. (Note: some states have already gone beyond this, like California.)
That said, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm also explained why there may be some hesitation. “Part of the challenge with the gas tax, of course, is that it funds the roads, and we just did a big infrastructure bill to help fund the roads,” said Granholm. “If we remove the gas tax, that takes away the funding that was just passed by Congress to be able to do that.”
