Reconnecting Ministries founder Grant Berry discusses the latest demand by Hamas, and whether Israel should give it serious consideration.
The battle between Hamas and Israel has been going for well over a year now, and could very well be heading into its second if progress is made. However, Hamas recently made a request that has certainly raised a few eyebrows.
During a recent visit to Cairo, an official for the group noted that it intends to release all Israeli hostages in exchange for a “serious prisoner swap.” In addition, it also requested that a guarantee from Israel that the war in Gaza will come to a conclusion.
“We are ready to release all Israeli captives in exchange for a serious prisoner deal, an end to the war, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza strip and entry of humanitarian aid,” noted Taher al-Nunu, the official who had made the visit.
That said, he did have his doubts, believing that Israel would get in the way of making any sort of progress towards a ceasefire.
“The issue is not the number of captives, but rather that the occupation is reneging on its commitments, blocking the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and continuing the war.”
Thus far, Israel was already working towards an agreement for the exchange of hostages in favor of working with them on a ceasefire. Despite Hamas’ claims that it would get in its own way.
But the real question is if Hamas’ call for peace will even be considered. And, for that matter, if they can truly be trusted on the promise of peace, considering it was their brutal actions that started the conflict to begin with well over a year ago.
Joining us now to discuss this further is Grant Berry, founder of Reconnecting Ministries and the author and producer of the Romans 911 project. His expertise on the matter make him a great subject for this interview. Welcome, Mr. Berry.
Q&A:
- Considering everything you’ve seen Hamas do against Israel, can they even be a slight bit trusted when it comes to this “guarantee” to end their conflict? Or is it a trick?
- What do you think Israel will do in response? Will they even give this offer any consideration? Even for the sake of the hostages?
- What about Hamas’ claims that Israel will get in its own way of negotiating a ceasefire? Why do they believe Israel is the country getting in the way of peace considering everything they’ve done?
- Do you see any sort of definitive end to the war? Israel had said in the past that the only way to win is to obliterate Hamas completely.
- Where do you see the conflict going in the months ahead?
