Gun Owners of America spokesman Stephen Willeford explains how these new laws could end the effectiveness of Constitutional-Carry.
In the face of the Supreme Court overturning certain gun laws, several states have taken matters into their own hands when it comes to creating rules surrounding how people carry guns.
Earlier this week, many spoke out against Oregon’s Measure 114, which would not only limit gun sales, but how people – including off-duty police officers – could utilize firearms. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
A report from the Washington Examiner reveals that several states have their own gun laws in the works. New Jersey, for example, is pushing a bill that requires a permit in order to carry a firearm – and, with it, a rather high price. Illinois is pushing for a similar bill, attempting to outlaw higher capacity magazines outright and ban assault-style weapons, similar to what President Joe Biden wants to do on a national level.
But the real question is how effective these restrictive gun laws would be in protecting human life. People are still able to obtain firearms; and in the wake of so many active shooter events taking place, seeing citizens that Constitutional Carry as a threat may show just how much they’re lacking focus on the matter.
Joining us now to discuss this growing trend is Stephen Willeford, a spokesman for the Gun Owners of America. You may recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise is certainly welcome in this matter.
Q&A:
- Why do you think so many states are upset by the Supreme Court’s decision earlier surrounding guns?
- How concerning is it that these states are taking a different approach when it comes to gun laws?
- Do you believe the new laws they’re trying to put in place are poorly thought out solutions? Could more violence be the result if they’re allowed to pass?
- Some people are questioning the effectiveness of citizens that practice Constitutional-Carry. But you think it’s a good idea to have them in place. Why do you think that?
- If these laws pass and more active shooter events take place, should these legislators feel guilty about not having Constitutional-Carry available to save lives?
- President Joe Biden believes an all-out ban on “assault weapons” would be effective, compared to Constitutional-Carry. Why do you think he won’t give the latter any sort of consideration?
- As someone that’s seen the “good guy with a gun” scenario first hand, what sort of law would you put in place to make Constitutional-Carry more effective in certain states? (Or any states, for that matter)?
- Where can we learn more about you, as well as the Gun Owners of America?
