The Latest Overturning of Restrictive Gun Laws In Maryland Bring Up a Simple Question – Why Do Officials Keep Trying To Make Laws That Go Against the Second Amendment?

A representative for the Second Amendment Foundation discusses the recent overturning, and ponders why some officials just keep trying.

Another week, another attempt by a state to pass a restrictive gun law, only to see it get cut down to size through the courts.

Right before the weekend, a federal judge managed to temporarily block portions of a new Maryland law that would have limited where firearms can be carried within the state.

The measure, titled S.B. 1, would have enforced restrictions on carrying guns in places where alcohol would have been sold, as well as during public demonstrations and on private property – something that would have served as a hindrance for those that utilize concealed-carry.

The judge felt that, based on precedents put in place with the Supreme Court’s 2022 Bruen decision, the Maryland law went beyond historical restrictions, and went against the Second Amendment.

While this is somewhat of a victory, parts of the law remain in place, including carrying a gun in state parks and museums, amongst other locations.

But it brings up an interesting question – why do states continue to try and create gun laws that go against what the Second Amendment stands for, particularly with the right to bear arms? A representative for the Second Amendment Foundation joins us now to discuss this matter further.

Q&A:

  1. First off, what do you think about Maryland’s most recent law to restrict concealed-carry in a number of locations? Did they set this up for protective purposes?
  2. Does this go against the very idea of people practicing concealed-carry in the first place? Since they generally do that to keep people safe from “active shooter” events, as well as other incidents?
  3. In your opinion, why do states continue to try to produce laws that restrict where guns can be carried, despite the fact that the Second Amendment of the Constitution protects their right to keep and bear arms?
  4. In spite of a number of these laws being struck down, do you believe states will continue to keep imposing restrictions?
  5. The Supreme Court will reportedly look into what’s happening with gun laws as part of its latest session. What do you believe the court will take a closer look at when it comes to these laws?
  6. Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation?
