Zelensky Proposes Negotiations in Jerusalem: Putin Is Open to the Idea Guest: David Rubin

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeated his call for peace negotiation with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Jerusalem. Putin has responded that he is open to the idea. Will such peace negotiations take place soon, and will they actually take place in Jerusalem, the ancient, but long-disputed capital of Israel?

Here to discuss is David Rubin, former Mayor of Shiloh, Israel, and author of “Confronting Radicals: What America Can Learn From Israel”.

Q&A:

  1. Why is there suddenly all this talk about Jerusalem? Jerusalem has always been a larger-than-life city, due to its religious and political significance as the historic capital of Israel that everyone loves to dispute.
  2. Yes, we know that, so why then is Jerusalem being promoted as a possible site for peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine? Despite the fact that Israel has condemned the invasion and voted against it in the UN, it is one of the few respected countries in the world that has positive dialogue with both Putin and Zelensky.
  3. How did the promotion of Jerusalem as a potential negotiation site get started? It was actually Zelensky who suggested the idea, but Putin responded that he would not object to the idea, so now we’ll see if Israel will issue a formal invitation, but I think that the spiritual and historical allure of Jerusalem is also a big part of the attraction, especially since there have historically been relatively large and significant Jewish populations in the two warring countries.
  4. Are there any signs of what these negotiations, wherever they are eventually held, might include? It seems clear that Putin is moving towards reluctantly accepting Ukrainian independence, while Zelensky is starting to move away from his insistence on Ukraine’s entry into the NATO Alliance. Hopefully, there will be continuing give and take leading towards a peace agreement.
