Window of Opportunity: Will Israel Attack Iran?

The New York Times and the Drudge Report are reporting that senior advisors have dissuaded President Donald Trump from launching a last-minute preemptive strike on the Iranian nuclear weapon facilities, including the Natanz site.

Meanwhile, Israelis are watching anxiously at the rapid crowning of a Biden administration, which is viewed as highly unlikely to stand with Israel and its new Arab allies in confronting the radical Islamic regime, as it enriches uranium way beyond the level allowed in the Iran nuclear deal that Biden himself was involved in crafting. Will Israel/ Can Israel go it alone?

Here to discuss is David Rubin, former mayor of Shiloh in Israel and author of “Trump and the Jews”.

Suggested Questions:

  1. Is it true that President Trump was considering a late hour raid on the Iranian nuclear facilities? Reports in the New York Times and the more conservative Drudge Report seem to confirm that Trump’s advisers dissuaded him from launching such an operation. The real question is in the nuances of what was decided and whether Israel was a factor in their discussion.
  2. Did we have those answers? Not at this point. Israel has also at various times considered launching its own preemptive strike, but it was decided instead to work closely with the Trump administration to support heavy sanctions, alongside various intelligence measures and cyber warfare, all of which have substantially weakened the regime.
  3. Nonetheless, all of those strategies haven’t stopped Iran’s enrichment of uranium, which reports say is twelve times beyond the level allowed in the Iran deal which Joe Biden helped to craft when he was vice-president. Will Israel launch its own preemptive strike before Biden enters the Oval Office? If Biden is officially declared president, Israel will have to decide if to strike with the passive military support and active political support of President Trump, or to wait and see what approach Biden will take.
  4. Which approach would you recommend for Israel? It is highly unlikely that Biden will stand with Israel if it takes the necessary aggressive action, but Israel has always acted when necessary, even at the last minute, to stop all existential threats. There is now a window of opportunity and the political risks will certainly be greater if we take the wait-and-see approach.
  5. Your book, “Trump and the Jews” explains how the Iran nuclear crisis developed as well as the differences in the Trump-Biden approaches to this dilemma. Where can people get a copy? They can get a copy at www.DavidRubinIsrael.com or go to Amazon and type in the words, Trump and the Jews.
