Why Governor Gavin Newsom’s California Gun Measures Will Create More Problems Than Solutions

Gun Owners of America Stephen Willeford explains why the new measure won’t slow the growing violence within Newsom’s state.

In an effort to try and quell the growing gun violence within his state of California, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a number of gun control measures into law, including limitations on where Californians can legally carry weapons. On top of that, he’s also created a state tax on firearms and ammunition, to the tune of 11 percent – on top of the existing 10 percent tax on guns and ammunition.

With this, Newsom hopes to fund school safety and violence reduction matters. However, since signing the measures into law last month, he’s seen nothing but disruption, with increased crime across the state (particularly in San Francisco), as well as growing lawsuits from gun rights advocates.

The inability for people to Concealed-Carry in certain locations could spell trouble as well, particularly in parks and sporting events. While Newsom may believe that putting guns in these public places is a danger, many believe that not being prepared for an “active shooter” event could be even more of a problem.

One of the people that believes this is Stephen Willeford, the spokesman for the Gun Owners of America. The “hero with a gun” from the 2017 Sutherland Springs incident has spoken in favor of Constitutional-Carry, and sees it as a viable solution with the growing violence problem. He joins us now to talk about the problems with Newsom’s gun measures – and why he should reverse course before legal trouble sets in.

Q&A:

  1. What do you think is the biggest problem with Newsom’s new gun control measures? The inability to Constitutional-Carry (or Concealed-Carry) in certain places? Or the growing tax rate?
  2. Could an increase in tax be a problem for gun sellers in California? And, for that matter, will it also wreak havoc on private gun owners or would-be private gun owners?
  3. Newsom has also discussed the process of “microstamping” guns, which he hopes to put in place by 2028. But won’t this hamper the manufacturing of guns?
  4. Why do you think Newsom is afraid of having Constitutional-Carry citizens within public spaces? Is he really that concerned about “more guns” being in the area, rather than the safety of his citizens?
  5. Do you believe Newsom will face legal action as a result, especially with the Second Amendment in place to protect the rights of gun owners?
  6. You noted how there’s a similar situation in regards to what’s happening in Israel. Can you explain this to us further?
  7. You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
  8. Where can people find your book?
    1. You can purchase the book here on Amazon, both in paperback and Kindle format.
  9. Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
