The Gun Owners of America note how anyone can strike at any time with Saturday’s attack on a White House security checkpoint.
A scary incident took place at a security checkpoint at the White House on Saturday, and even though it was foiled, it shows just how easily a mentally deranged person can strike with a firearm, according to Gun Owners of America spokesman Stephen Willeford.
The shooting occurred early Saturday night at a Secret Service checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. A man, identified as Nasire Best, pulled a gun from a bag and opened fire on officers, hitting a bystander before being taken down by gunfire. Best later died from his wounds.
Best has had problems with the law before, with a history of mental health concerns. He had trouble with the White House before, walking into a restricted area of the White House back on July 10th. He was arrested following his insistence that he be taken in, and that he was Jesus Christ.
This incident could’ve been a lot worse had the Secret Service not acted. But it shows just how easily an “active shooter” event can break out at any time in the United States – which cites the need for more open-carry and Constitutional-Carry citizens. Though over half of the U.S. supports these citizens, there’s still much work to be done – especially when it comes to states such as Colorado and Virginia setting up restrictive gun laws that are deemed unnecessary.
Stephen Willeford knows all too well the effects of being a hero in a dangerous situation. He was known as the “hero with a gun” in the 2017 situation in Sutherland Springs, where he effectively stopped a deadly attack. He now serves as spokesman for the Gun Owners of America, and joins us now to discuss this matter further. Welcome, Stephen!
Q&A:
- What does this incident at the White House say about someone mentally unstable creating an “active shooter” event? They literally seem to happen out of nowhere these days, and innocent people get hurt or even killed regularly.
- You’ve often discussed how Open-Carry and Constitutional-Carry citizens can make a difference in situations such as these. Talk to us about the advantages.
- What are the differences between Open-Carry and Constitutional-Carry?
- What about those that would argue against Open-Carry and Constitutional-Carry, like local governments in Colorado and Virginia? Why do they continue to set up restrictive gun laws that are actively against the Second Amendment?
- You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
