The retired Sergeant Major and author discusses why the impeachment needed to happen in the House – but how that’ll likely be as far as it goes.
Earlier this week, House Republicans were finally able to do what they failed to do the first time around – impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
In a close vote (214-213), the House of Representatives voted to impeach Mayorkas, following what they deem a lackluster handling of the ongoing migrant crisis in the United States.
But now comes the hard part for them – trying to see if the Senate will follow through. “The House impeachment managers will present the articles of impeachment to the Senate following the state work period,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer noted. “Senators will be sworn in as jurors in the trial the next day. Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray will preside.”
Did Mayorkas deserve to go? And, for that matter, what will happen next?
Joining us now to discuss this further is retired U.S. Army Sergeant Major John deVerteuil. Along with more than thirty-three years of service to his country, John recently wrote a book called We Are America: A Voice from the Silent Majority, which “offers real, sustainable solutions to our national crises, including candid discussions on debt, term limits, taxation, and immigration.” His expertise in what’s happening make him a welcome subject for this interview. Welcome, John.
Q&A:
- Did Mayorkas deserve what happened in terms of his impeachment by the House? Why or why not?
- As far as the Senate is concerned, do you believe they’ll complete the impeachment? Or is Mayorkas’ job safe?
- What can Mayorkas be doing better as far as handling the migrant crisis is concerned?
- If Mayorkas is allowed to stay on board, would you see it as the DHS continuing to fail at border protection? What do you believe the reasoning behind this could be?
- What kind of effect could the Mayorkas impeachment – and for that matter, the migrant crisis in general – have on Joe Biden’s desired re-election as President?
- Tell us more about your book We Are America: A Voice from the Silent Majority, and what prompted you to write it after your many years in service.
- Where can people find your book?
