Twitter CEO Elon Musk Admits That the Government Has “Full Access” To Direct Messages – A Critical Blow To Online Invasion of Privacy

A representative of the social media website WiMKiN explains why this violates the rights to users – but wonders why nothing is being done about it.

When the George Orwell novel 1984 indicated that “Big Brother is watching,” people may not have realized how accurate that statement has become.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk recently appeared on Tucker Carlson’s show on Fox News; and during his stay, he noted that the government had “full access” to users’ direct messages on the platform.

“The degree to which government agencies effectively had full access to everything that was going on on Twitter blew my mind,” Musk explained. “I was not aware of that.” Carlson then asked if this was regarding direct messages, and Elon confirmed, “Yes.”

While Musk also discussed other subjects on the show, including artificial intelligence, he did seem to show concern over how easy the government can comb over conversations that are, for the most part, supposed to be between the parties.

But what does this say about the invasion of social media, and how easy it is for the government to essentially pick and choose which conversations to monitor? Here to discuss the potential impact of the RESTRICT Act is either Kevin Jackson, who is owner of The Kevin Jackson Network and now WimKiN’s vice president of content management; or Jason Sheppard, the founder of WiMKiN. They are greatly concerned about what could happen to social media in the months ahead.

Q&A:

  1. How concerning is it that the Federal government has “full access” to some users’ information on social media?
  2. Do you believe this is a complete invasion of privacy, considering a majority of these conversations don’t have any harmful content to begin with?
  3. Why do you think Musk wasn’t doing more to keep the Federal government from accessing these direct messages? Could he be fearful of fines or further regulation of his social media site?
  4. WiMKiN’s team actually went up against the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) – and won! – in an effort to keep the site completely free of interference and spying. Tell us more about this fight, what the toughest part of it was, and how it feels to offer services completely free of interference.
  5. Your site has really come a long way since its launch just a few months ago, with nearly nine million users and a growing list of features. What would you say is the most attractive aspect of WiMKiN, for those that are interested in signing up?
  6. With this information about Twitter and possibly other social media sites being prone for government invasion, do you believe this will draw more people to join WiMKiN and see what it has to offer?
  7. Where can users download the WiMKiN app?

It’s available for download here on the App Store, and is also available on Google Play. For those that prefer to use it on desktop, you can simply visit this page.

  1. Finally, where can people register for WiMKiN and learn more about what it has to offer?
