The former Mayor of Shiloh weighs in on the Prime Minister’s latest actions.
As if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wasn’t facing enough opposition with the changes he’s set to bring to Israel, he’s managed to get the ire of thousands of Israelis, protesting over his plans to overhaul the country’s legal system.
Though Netanyahu’s program shows ambition with how justice will be served, it’s left citizens feeling divided. Netanyahu’s plan calls for the country’s unelected judges to have their power reined in to a more balanced state. However, critics feel that this plan could create a conflict of interest as a result, to serve for his own personal purposes.
Leader of the Opposition Yair Lapid addressed the demonstration, which took place earlier this week and drew thousands of Israelis. “They hear us,” he explained. “They hear our strength and our commitment. They pretend they don’t hear. They present they’re not afraid. But they hear and they are afraid.”
But the real question now is how much bigger the protests may get – and what kind of further divide this could bring to Israel. Joining us now to discuss this further is David Rubin, who previously served as the mayor of Shiloh and is currently the author of seven books, as well as the founder of Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund. His expertise should prove quite useful in this matter.
Q&A:
- Do you think Netanyahu has a point with some judges having too much power in the country? Is an overhaul really needed to bring things back to balance?
- What do you think is driving the Israelis that are protesting right now? Do they simply see Netanyahu as “too corrupt” with his current court case? Or is there something else?
- Yair Lapid seems to be pushing for a revolution in Israel with the protestors – but what kind of long-term damage could he possibly create with this?
- Is there a solution that Lapid should look into instead of leading a protest like this that could divide the country?
- Where do you see things going for Israel in the months ahead if this fight between Netanyahu and the protestors continues?
- Do you possibly see the United States getting involved if things get out of hand? Or will this stay in Israel’s court?
- Where can we learn more about you and your work with Shiloh Israel Children?
