The January 6th Committee Voted To Refer Criminal Charges To Former President Donald Trump  (Guest: Scott Wheeler)

Investigative Reporter Scott Wheeler takes a look at what unfolded earlier this week.

Following what occurred in January 2021, the committee put together by the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives set out to prove Trump was responsible.

The committee voted on Monday to recommend that the Department of Justice press four criminal charges against former President Donald Trump, accusing him of inciting the riot that took place at the U.S. Capitol. The charges were obstructing an official proceeding, making false statements, defrauding the United States and inciting an insurrection.

While many anti-Trumpers applauded the decision, some took a closer look at the actions of the committee. For instance, NBC News noted that it is up to the U.S. Department of Justice to make the case for federal criminal prosecution, not Congress. As a result, the committee looking to uphold the law may have just put themselves in a position of flouting it. The report also noted how it looks more like the actions of a Special Prosecutor, rather than a balanced committee.

Here to speak with us on the matter today is Scott Wheeler, an Investigative Reporter who serves as Chief Correspondent for American Investigator Television Magazine. He has also contributed to other publications such as Forbes Magazine, The Washington Times and The Hill. His expertise should prove useful in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. What do the committee’s actions towards former President Trump say as a whole?
  2. Does NBC News have a point in terms of the committee somewhat flouting the law by its recommendations for criminal prosecution?
  3. What do you think will come of the committee’s findings? Will the Justice Department act? Could there possibly be a court that works against Trump’s favor, merely by what the committee has recommended?
  4. What do you think this will mean for Trump’s attempt to get on the 2024 ballot?
  5. Do you believe the press may have played a part in how the committee acted or put its decisions together?
  6. Tell us more about your work with American Investigator Television Magazine.
  7. Where can we learn more about what you’re working on, and what you and your team will be investigating next?
