The host and producer of the docuseries BorderWars discusses what she’s seen, and why more people should be paying attention to the human effect.
Various news reports talk about the “aggressive” side of the ongoing border crisis, and how so many manage to slip into the United States. But a new article by The Epoch Times points out a more tragic side, one that is affecting rescue crews in Texas.
The legendary Rio Grande river has become a boon for Eager Pass Fire Chief Manuel Mello III and his fellow first responders, as they continue to pull bodies out – migrants and their families attempting to enter the United States.
They are seeing “record numbers of drowned men, women and children who perish while crossing the river from Mexico into the United States,” the report notes.
Mello recently spoke to a congressional committee about everything him and his team have seen. “There are days it seems that the ambulance wails never stop.”
That said, Mello also made an important note as to how the federal government isn’t helping more of these border stations with assistance, and has requested funds to request more ambulance runs as well as secure counseling. The real question, however, is if him and his team will get it.
Joining us now to discuss this further is Nicole McCaw, a host and producer with NTD Television. She currently serves as producer and host for BorderWars, a new documentary that follows her and her crew as they look at the trials and tribulations occurring at the U.S./Mexico border. Her expertise make her an ideal guest for his show. Welcome, Nicole!
Q&A:
- Why do you think so many media outlets are afraid to publish losses such as these? Is it merely due to how they cover the “border crisis” as it stands?
- You’ve noted that you’ve seen something similar to this while making BorderWars. What did you see and how did it affect you?
- Mello seemed to make a heartfelt plea for more federal funding to help out border services. Do you think there’s any chance he’ll get it? Or will the Biden Administration likely remain ignorant?
- Speaking of the Biden Administration, why is he taking such a relaxed approach to the “border crisis” instead of actually making a difference with more money and support, you think?
- Regarding the “border crisis,” let’s talk about your documentary BorderWars. What motivated you to work on this?
- What would you say was the biggest challenge in getting BorderWars made?
- What has the response to BorderWars been like so far?
- Where can we watch BorderWars? And where can we find more information about it?
