The House Judiciary Committee Is Preparing a “Protecting Our Kids Act”, But How Much Of a Limitation Will It Put On Gun Owners? (Guest: 2nd Amendment Foundation members)

Following the deadly shooting at a school in Uvalde, Texas that left 19 students and two teachers dead, the House Judiciary Committee appear to be working on a new bill called the “Protecting Our Kids Act” that could change certain rules to those that purchase guns.

The big standout is raising the lawful age of purchasing a semiautomatic rifle from 18 to 21, but there are other notes as well. These include creating federal offenses for gun trafficking and selling large-capacity magazines, as well as possibly introducing a criminal penalty for those that don’t meet requirements when it comes to the storage of firearms on residential premises.

Several Republicans, as well as many gun owners, are questioning the new bill, and what kind of effect it will have on future shootings. To discuss this in further detail, we’ve invited a spokesperson from the 2ndAmendment Foundation to provide their perspective.

  1. What do you think the biggest problem of the “Protecting Our Kids Act” is? The age limitation? The possibility of a penalty for someone that doesn’t properly store their gun? Something else?
  2. Senator Cory Booker believes that passing this bill may stop the “daily carnage” we’ve seen from mass shootings. Do you believe that is the case, or could this make things worse?
  3. Do you believe “federal offenses,” as they’re noted above, could even leave a dent in the sale of illegal guns?
  4. There has been a lot of talk in the past about the possibility of introducing more open-carry rules. Do you think this will go further to protecting innocent people rather than passing something like this act?
  5. If you were able to introduce measures to stop school shootings, how would you go about it? What would you include?
  6. Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation and its members?
  7. Those interested can visit http://www.saf.org/.
