A New Gun Control Legislation Measure Could Be Voted On This Week – But How Much Will It Infringe On the Rights of Gun Owners? (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

A new report from CNN indicates that the House Judiciary Committee is preparing to vote on a new gun control legislation bill as soon as this week, in the wake of the deadly Uvalde school shooting that left 19 students and two teachers dead.

In the measure, according to the report notes, the lawful age to purchase a semiautomatic rifle would rise from 18 to 21. Furthermore, it would introduce a potential penalty for those that don’t meet certain requirements on the “storage of firearms on residential premises,” as well as federal offenses for gun trafficking and selling large-capacity magazines.

Known as the “Protecting Our Kids Act,” the bill appears to be gaining some traction amongst the Democratic-controlled house heading into its potential vote. But how much would it hurt those that own firearms, including those that have them merely for the sake of protection?

Speaking with us about this new bill is Stephen Willeford. Stephen serves as a spokesman for Gun Owners of America. You may also recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise is certainly welcome in this matter.

  1. You’ve spoken out in the past about the potential for “open carry” when it comes to protecting others. But this bill seems to be going against that grain. Do you believe this measure is a bad idea?
  2. What’s probably the toughest of the measures in this bill that gun owners will be able to accept? The pushing of legal age from 18 to 21? Or the potential penalties for not properly storing a firearm? Or are they both equally bad?
  3. Will introducing federal offenses for gun trafficking and selling large-capacity magazines have any effect on how illegal modified rifles are sold in this country? Or do you believe this could possibly increase said sales?
  4. Cory Booker noted that the Democrats were looking at this bill for the sake of “bipartisan gun safety.” But do you believe this could potentially hurt gun owners?
  5. If you were in charge of some sort of bill to slow the mass shootings in this country, what measures would you consider introducing?
  6. Where can we learn more about you and your current work with the Gun Owners of America?
