Spokesman Stephen Willeford explains why the group is stepping up to protect the rights of millions of gun owners.
Just two years after the Gun Owners of America uncovered internal ATF documents pointing at the Biden Administration potentially establishing an illegal registry of gun and ownership records, the group is doing something about it.
Recently, Rep. Michael Cloud reintroduced the No REGISTRY Rights Act (H.R. 1271), which, if passed, would require the ATF to destroy any purchase records that it has currently stored within their database. For good measure, it would also require closing gun records to destroy any records they have as well, so they wouldn’t go to the ATF.
Aidan Johnston, director of federal affairs for Gun Owners of America, told Fox News Digital “ATF has no business maintaining nearly a billion gun and gun owner records in a digital, searchable database.”
Ownership records of guns have come into question over the past few years following an increase in “active shooter” events, but the Gun Owners of America firmly believes that the right to bear arms – the Second Amendment in the Constitution – should stand strong over any sort of database the ATF and the Biden Administration are trying to build.
Joining us now is Stephen Willeford, a spokesman for the Gun Owners of America. You may recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise is welcome in this matter.
Q&A:
- Why would President Biden and the ATF be working on a database of gun owners? Surveillance? Potential control? Fuel for Biden’s proposed “assault weapons” ban?
- What’s probably the most bothersome aspect of such a list existing? Violating the rights of U.S. citizens? Being illegal? A combination of these?
- Do you believe Cloud’s measure stands a good chance of getting passed? If so, could other bills and acts be introduced in an effort to protect gun owners?
- You’ve pushed for the longest time for Constitutional-Carry (or Concealed-Carry as it’s called in some parts) would be far more effective against “active shooters” rather than a full-on gun ban. Why do you think that is the case?
- What argument would you have for someone that believes a ban of “assault weapons” would be effective? The fact that people would still be able to get their hands on firearms if they need them? Or something else?
- Tell us more about your “hero with a gun” incident in 2017, and the importance of being ready against an “active shooter.”
- Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
