At 4:15am on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at Calvary Hospice in the Bronx, Chris Slattery, 40-year-long pro-life pioneer and hero, died at 68. Fighting two stage-four cancers, this pro-life champion entered hospice on November 14. He received last rights surrounded by his wife and children, supported by numerous priests and bishops.
Chris’ legacy will echo into eternity with over 46,000 babies alive today who otherwise would have been aborted—enough to fill Yankee Stadium. During his prolonged battle with two different cancers, Chris cast his leadership mantle on Rev. Jim Harden, CEO of embattled New York-based pro-life medical network, CompassCare.
Q&A:
- Who was Chris Slattery?
Answer: To me, he was a friend. To the world, he was a fighter. And to over 43,000 babies who are alive today because of his work, he is a champion. Chris began blazing the trail to save lives in the American abortion capital, New York City, in 1979, shortly after the legalization of abortion. Using his advertising expertise acquired at Boston College, Chris founded the pregnancy center network, Expectant Mother Care, later known as EMC Frontline with 14 locations throughout the five-borough area.
- You knew Chris well. What was his motivation even into his last days?
Answer: In his own words, “The most precious beings in the world are human beings, made in [God’s] likeness and image, with an eternal soul.”
- You consider Chris Slattery to be a pioneer in the pro-life movement. Tell us about his trailblazing legacy.
Answer: Chris’ pioneering spirit gave rise to the use of ultrasound scans in 1986, 20 years before most pregnancy centers ever considered using the technology. He even took imagining to the streets with mobile medical vans, now so popular nationwide. Ultrasound imagining provides a woman considering abortion with true informed consent, both confirming a woman’s pregnancy while humanizing the child.
- Chris made enemies in the pro-abortion ranks. What do you think their response will be?
Answer: In his later years, Chris became enemy number one for the abortion empire headquartered in Manhattan as well as pro-abortion politicians seeking to protect the abortion empire—politicians like New York Attorneys General, New York Governors, and New York City Council whose goal was to shut down Chris’ lifesaving efforts.
- What has the response of the media been so far?
Answer: I predict the left-leaning media, likely the New York Times in particular, will celebrate Chris’ death. In a similar fashion to how they attacked other conservative leaders after their passing, I believe there are plans in the works even now to attempt to smear Chris’ good name. To that, I say shame on them.
- Tell us more about Chris.
Answer: It is never popular to take a public stand against systemic injustice. Chris Slattery’s no-nonsense style offended the sensibilities of many people both inside the pro-life industry while frightening pro-abortion activists masquerading as medical providers or politicians. I imagine Biblical prophets like Jeremiah experienced similar rejection. I loved this about Chris.
- You were the last person to interview him publicly. What can you tell us about the transition?
Answer: I asked Chris what advice he would give the pro-life community, “Figure out how to save babies.” Referring to New York, he continued, “We have to compete with this. You can’t throw up our hands and say, ‘What a shame.’ No! What an opportunity to respond with intelligence, and savvy, and well-placed financial donations.”
- What impact did Chris have on NYC?
Answer: Chris said, “I have a unique talent of saving children from being killed.” He saved over 46,000 babies through Expectant Mother Care. In honor and memory of this hero, I’m calling on NY Gov. Kathy Hochul to lower all flags throughout the State to half-staff. It is an honor that Chris would place his pro-life mantle on me.
- How can people honor Chris’ legacy?
Answer: Your financial impact, made in honor of Chris Slattery, will be matched dollar-for-dollar by a generous team of donors, amassing resources precisely where the abortion battle is being fought, in the American abortion capital of New York.
