Pike’s Peek at Mercy: Christa Pike Survives Execution as Door to Redemption Cracks Open

Two lethal-injection doses failed to kill Christa Pike. Is it possible that the unexpected extension of her life could become an opportunity for mercy, repentance and salvation? Sid Roth, host of It’s Supernatural! and author of the new book The Glory Story, is available to discuss the profound spiritual question raised by Tennessee’s unprecedented, failed execution: What if a person convicted of an extraordinarily brutal murder is given one more opportunity to turn to God?

  • Two lethal injections failed during Christa Pike’s Tennessee execution attempt
  • Pike survived both doses before being transported to a hospital
  • Sid Roth explores whether unexpected survival can create spiritual opportunities
  • Christian theology holds repentance and salvation remain possible until death
  • Mercy does not erase murder, justice or suffering of Colleen Slemmer’s family

On September 30, Tennessee officials administered two doses of pentobarbital during Pike’s execution, but she survived and was transported to a hospital. Her attorneys said Thursday that she was in critical condition. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has since halted the state’s remaining executions for the year while an independent investigation examines what went wrong.

For Roth, the story raises a question far beyond the mechanics of lethal injection. If Pike has been given additional time, could that time have eternal significance?

Christianity’s message of salvation is that Jesus Christ died for sinners—even those guilty of horrific crimes. The Bible’s account of Saul of Tarsus provides a striking parallel: Saul persecuted Christians before his encounter with Jesus transformed him into Paul, one of Christianity’s most influential apostles. The possibility of repentance does not erase the murder of Colleen Slemmer, minimize her family’s suffering or negate earthly justice. But Christian theology holds that no sinner is beyond the reach of God’s forgiveness.

Roth can discuss whether an unexpected extension of life should prompt a deeper question: What does a person do with the time God gives them?

That question is particularly timely as Roth releases The Glory Story on October 6. The book draws on more than 50 years of Roth’s experiences with what he describes as God’s supernatural presence and explores salvation, spiritual encounter, obedience and recognizing God’s activity in the world.

Roth would not claim to know why Pike survived or presume to know her relationship with God. Instead, he can offer a Christian perspective on what this extraordinary moment could mean: Whether someone has one day, one year or many decades remaining, there may still be time to repent, seek Christ and prepare for eternity.
