So Why Would Americans Help Illegal Immigrants Into the United States? It’s All About Cash (Guest: Kay Rubacek)

The producer and editor of the new Epoch Times documentary Gotaways discusses the appeal – and consequences – from helping illegals slip by.

A stirring new documentary recently debuted on Epoch TV, discussing how immigrants are easily capable of slipping into the United States. Titled Gotaways, the film spans the course of a two-year timeframe, following director/producer Charlotte Cuthbertson as she looks how so many “gotaways” are slipping past the border.

One of the primary reasons they’re able to get in unnoticed is due to outside help. According to this piece from The Epoch Times, some Americans are convinced to help out some of these illegals, due to the promise of cash payment. They receive correspondence via social media (particularly the popular – and dangerous – TikTok service), where would-be smugglers promise them wads of cash for “simply” giving someone a ride.

Of course, with the economy being the way it is – and young people desperate for money – it’s easier to convince them than expected. However, a lot of them end up getting caught in the act by Border Patrol agents and others, facing a severe sentence for something they believed would be a “simple” job.

Arrested have nearly quadrupled over the past few years, growing from 169 in 2020 all the way to 741 last year. This year has already seen over 500, and that number isn’t stopping anytime soon.

What can we learn from this? Joining us now to discuss this situation further is Kay Rubacek, producer and editor of the film. Her experience in seeing what happened and how it affects modern Americans will provide further insight into it.

Q&A:

  1. Based on what you and Charlotte have seen from this two-year experience, would you say it’s fairly simple to convince some Americans to help illegal citizens into this country?
  2. Would you say we’re seeing a lot more younger people helping them out? Or is it really different types of Americans?
  3. Do you believe they understand the risk that comes with helping immigrants, and the potential jail time and fines that follow?
  4. Is there a better way that the Border Patrol – and other government agencies – can warn Americans about helping these illegal immigrants?
  5. Tell us more about Gotaways, and what viewers can learn from what you and Charlotte have put together.
  6. We understand that Charlotte just won the Best First Time Director award for Gotaways at the Oniros New York Film Festival. What would you say about this accomplishment?
  7. Where can we learn more about Gotaways, as well as you in general?
