Depraved actions by protestors has law enforcement veteran Michael Letts up in arms.
In the wake of Seattle still attempting to recover from its “Defund the Police” campaign that has led to a rampant increase of crime within the city, several leftist protestors are still pushing for defunding to be done.
The Stranger recently reported that organizers recently held some odd organizations at City Hall to protest the actions by the local council to cut proposed funding to fill positions within the Seattle Police Department. This includes an elaborate campaign involving red paint, as well as protestors dressed up as Ghostbusters (from the film), as well as “ghost cops” with bed sheets and police hats.
In addition, they played the “Ghostbusters” song by Ray Parker Jr., filling in “Who you gonna call?” with “no ghost cops, defund SPD.” The group’s intent was to pressure the city’s mayor from spending money on police, in favor of “human service providers.” However, that wouldn’t make up for the rampant increase in crime. The council had no response to the incident.
With us now to discuss this further is Michael Letts, an officer-supporting advocate with over 30 years of law enforcement under his belt. Letts currently serves as founder, CEO and president for InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships. - What do you think angers you the most about these protestors? The fact they still believe police should be defunded in the midst of a growing crime wave? Or something else?
- What’s your thoughts on their notion that $17 million (the current noted amount in the city’s budget) would be used for “ghost positions” in the Seattle Police Department, rather than filling the roles with officers that could keep the streets much safer?
- As someone who’s been supporting police officers for many years, how much does it anger you to see people still demanding the defunding of police officers, even after two years of several campaigns going through and resulting in a catastrophic rise in criminal activity?
- Is there request for “services” out of line when it comes to taking care of some of Seattle’s homeless? Or is stopping criminal activity a higher priority?
- If you were in charge of reshaping Seattle’s budget to help the police, how would you go about it? Support for mental health? Additional gear? A bit of both, perhaps?
