New York Governor Kathy Hochul Reveals New Gun Laws To Help Protect the Public – But How Much Will They Protect Gun Owners? (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

Shortly before the Labor Day weekend, New York Governor Kathy Hochul put a number of new gun laws in effect, following actions taken by the Supreme Court to reverse its recent decision against the state.

These include increased background checks and firearm safety and live-fire training for those seeking to carry gun permits, as well as a required renewal of permits every three years. But the big one strikes a blow against those believing in the initiative of concealed-carry, as those individuals will no longer be allowed in “sensitive” locations, such as bars, hospitals and the entirety of Times Square.

“In response to the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down New York’s century-old concealed carry law, we took swift and thoughtful action to keep New Yorkers safe,” Governor Hochul noted in a press conference. “I refuse to surrender my right as Governor to protect New Yorkers from gun violence or any other form of harm. In New York State, we will continue leading the way forward and implementing common sense gun safety legislation.”

But these new restrictions have been met with great criticism, particularly from politicians and private gun owners who believe this is an attack on their concealed-carry beliefs.

Here to speak with us now on the subject is Stephen Willeford. Not only is he a gun owner, but he also serves as a spokesman for Gun Owners of America. You may also recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise is certainly welcome with this particular subject.

Q&A:

  1. Some people believe Governor Hochul’s new gun laws for the state are too restrictive, especially when it comes to concealed-carry. What are your personal two cents’ on the matter?
  2. You’ve spoken for the longest time about how effective concealed-carry is, especially when it comes to stopping active shooters. Do you believe it’s still an effective option? Why do you think Hochul doesn’t believe that’s the case?
  3. Do you believe there may be too many requirements when it comes to getting a gun permit within the state? What’s the best way to go about getting effective training for such a role, in your opinion?
  4. Could Times Square see an uptick in criminal activity as a result of the concealed-carry rule?
  5. If you had the chance to draft New York’s gun bill, what rules would you personally put in place?
  6. Where can we learn more about you, as well as the Gun Owners of America?
