Following the Supreme Court’s reversal of New York’s stringent gun restrictions, the state has struck back with a number of laws aimed specifically at those who practice concealed-carry.
In an announcement late last week, Governor Kathy Hochul announced the new laws, taking effect over the Labor Day Weekend. The main one among these prohibits concealed carry permit holders from bringing their firearms into “sensitive” locations, including Times Square, bars and hospitals.
In addition, the laws call for increased background checks and firearm safety and live-fire training for all carriers, as well as a requirement of renewal or recertification after every three years.
Governor Hochul noted, “I refuse to surrender my right as Governor to protect New Yorkers from gun violence or any other form of harm. In New York State, we will continue leading the way forward and implementing common sense gun safety legislation.”
Here to speak about the new laws now is a representative of the Second Amendment Foundation, a group that believes in the rights of all private gun owners, and fully supports the concealed-carry initiative when it comes to safety. Their expertise will certainly weigh heavily on this matter.
Q&A:
- Do you consider Governor Hochul’s new laws to be a personal attack on private gun owners and those that concealed-carry? Are they possibly going too far?
- What do you think about Hochul’s ruling to concealed-carry into “sensitive” locations such as bars, hospitals and Times Square?
- Governor Hochul made note that this is a matter of safety. However, wouldn’t criminals still be able to enter these locations anyway? Wouldn’t taking concealed-carry out of the picture actually put people further into danger?
- Since the Supreme Court’s overturning of its previous laws, New York seems to be pressing a lot further into allowing people to register for firearms. What are your thoughts on these new limitations?
- What are your thoughts on Hochul requiring gun owners to take 16-hour classroom teaching and live-fire firearm safety courses to meet her requirements? Are they too strict?
- As a representative of the Second Amendment Foundation, do you believe this is a violation to the rights of private gun owners?
- If you had the opportunity to draw up a gun bill for the state, how would you go about it? Would you follow initiatives that support those that believe in concealed-carry, or take a different approach?
- Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation and its members?
