Gun Owners of America spokesman Stephen Willeford explains why the state shouldn’t be so hasty to ban guns.
With the number of “active shooter” events taking place in the United States, some states are taking heavy measures in an effort to tone down the violence. New Mexico, however, might be taking things to extremes.
The state recently called for a new bill, New Mexico H.B. 101, that would ban the (new) possession, manufacturing, delivery, sales, imports and all-out purchases of “assault weapons,” including a number of semi-auto rifles and handguns.
This law has similar restrictions to one put in place by Illinois. But like those laws, it’s facing certain challenges in court, particularly with the Second Amendment in the Constitution. Not to mention the fact that California put such a law in place and continues to see “active shooter” events with no signs of dropping.
Should the bill go through? Or should New Mexico consider another solution to the problem? Here to speak with us more about this is Stephen Willeford, the spokesman for Gun Owners of America. You may recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise is welcome in this matter.
Q&A:
- Why do you think that an all-out ban of “assault weapons” isn’t a good idea? And shouldn’t the Second Amendment of the Constitution stop it from being passed to begin with?
- What argument would you have for someone when they say that banning “assault weapons” could keep people safer?
- California went through a similar ban but didn’t see any sort of decrease in violence. Why do you think that is?
- You’ve often discussed how Constitutional-Carry (or Concealed-Carry) is a safer alternative to a banning of “assault weapons.” Why do you think this is the case?
- Tell us more about your “hero with a gun” incident in 2017, and the importance of being ready against an “active shooter.”
- Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
