Netanyahu Unaffected By ICC Arrest Threat

Former Mayor of Shiloh David Rubin explains why the Prime Minister is pushing forward with his visit to Hungary – and why the ICC’s warrant simply doesn’t matter.

In the midst of its ongoing conflict with Hamas, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to visit Hungary this week, visiting his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban. What’s interesting about this is that he’ll be visiting the country after the International Criminal Court put out a warrant for his arrest back in November.

The ICC put out the warrants on the basis that Netanyahu, alongside former defense chief and Hamas leader Ibrahim Al-Masri, were responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the midst of the Gaza conflict. They felt that they were criminally responsible for what they call a “widespread and systematic attack against the civilian population of Gaza.” Israel denounced the charges shortly thereafter.

With his visit, Orban noted that the warrant would “not be observed” with Netanyahu’s visit. And though there has been no word from the ICC, they will likely look into some kind of enforcement or, at the very least, punishment against Orban.

Joining us now to discuss this further is David Rubin, former mayor of Shiloh, Israel, and Founder of the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund. Welcome, Mayor Rubin.

Q&A:

  1. What are your thoughts on the arrest warrants issued by the ICC to begin with? Were these even necessary?
  2. Do you believe the ICC will try to punish either Netanyahu or Orban since it appears that the arrest warrant is being completely ignored? What form of retaliation could they take?
  3. What purpose do you believe Netanyahu’s visit to Hungary will have? Could it aid Israel in its time of need?
  4. How do you feel the conflict has become over the past few months? Does Israel finally have the support it needs to end its conflict with Hamas? Or is the worst yet to come?
  5. Tell us more about the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund and how it can help those in need.
  6. Where can we learn more about you and the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund?
