Minnesota’s Restrictive Gun Laws Are the Wrong Way To Go When It Comes To Solving Violence (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

The spokesman for Gun Owners of America explains why the state’s drastic steps to control gun ownership is a mistake, compared to a more obvious solution.

Governor Tim Walz is about to sign a “red flag law” into effect in Minnesota, and it spells bad news for private gun owners, as well as those that the state could possibly mislabel as an “imminent threat.”

With the law, authorities would be able to walk into court with “extreme risk protection orders” in an effort to disarm anyone that they deem would be an “imminent threat” – even with a minor amount of evidence. It would also expand background checks for private gun transfers.

Walz noted in a statement, “As a veteran, gun-owner, hunter, and dad, I know that basic gun safety isn’t a threat to the Second Amendment. It’s about our first responsibility to our kids: Keeping them safe.”

While safety is obviously a good thing to focus on, Minnesota is going the wrong way to assure less gun violence within its state. With us now to talk about this more is Stephen Willeford, the spokesman for Gun Owners of America. You may recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise is welcome in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. Tell us straight up – why is Minnesota’s “red flag law” surrounding guns the worst route it can take to controlling gun violence?
  2. Do you think it’s a bit controlling for the state to deem people as an “imminent threat” and keep them away from a firearm that they may need in terms of protection?
  3. What do you think when you hear the term “extreme risk protection order”? Shouldn’t it just generally be a protection order to begin with?
  4. You’ve talked in the past about the effectiveness of Constitutional-Carry (or Concealed-Carry) against “active shooters,” especially in comparison to a gun ban. Do you still believe this would be the best solution? Why?
  5. Could legal action possibly come from this Minnesota “red flag law” scenario, especially given the stature of the Second Amendment? Where do you see this battle going in the months ahead?
  6. Tell us more about your “hero with a gun” incident in 2017, and the importance of being ready against an “active shooter.”
  7. Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
