Is this simply a series of individual political success stories, or part of a much larger strategy to gain influence within America’s democratic institutions? Amanda Grace, an expert on the Muslim Brotherhood agenda and electoral politics, can connect the historical dots and examine what Americans may be overlooking.
And this isn’t new.
In 2006, Keith Ellison (D-MN) became the first Muslim elected to Congress. His relationships with organizations such as the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), identified in federal court proceedings as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terrorism-financing case, raised questions about his political associations. Rep. Andre Carson (D-IN), elected in 2008, subsequently faced similar scrutiny over his connections to CAIR and other organizations identified by critics as having Muslim Brotherhood ties.
Fast-forward to today. Mamdani, now mayor of the city that endured the September 11 attacks, drew national attention after posing for a smiling photograph with Brooklyn imam Siraj Wahhaj, whose name appeared on a federal prosecutors’ list of unindicted co-conspirators in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. By definition, Wahhaj is a jihadist but not a very stealth one, based on his garb.
Meanwhile, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has faced persistent controversy over her immigration history, political rhetoric and positions on American foreign policy. In Michigan, El-Sayed, a former vice president of the University of Michigan’s Muslim Students Association (MSA), is pursuing a seat in the U.S. Senate. In November 2012, he signed a letter urging Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, a Muslim Brotherhood leader, to shut down media opposition to his government.
We also learned in 2011 that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s deputy chief of staff, Huma Abedin, was steeped in Muslim Brotherhood connections through her family, which knows all about jihad. Her mother, Saleha, was one of 63 leaders in the Muslim Sisterhood. One of the other 62 was none other than Morsi’s wife. On September 11, 2012, four Americans lost their lives in Benghazi at the hands of Ansar al-Sharia, a Muslim Brotherhood group during an attack on a U.S. consulate and CIA Annex.
Those four Americans were working for the U.S. State Department, to include the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens. Huma Abedin had no business having a security clearance and those who issued her that clearance put American lives in danger.
Unfortunately, el-Sayed’s opponent in the U.S. Senate race in Michigan, is Mike Rogers (R-MI), who referred to Abedin as an “American patriot” instead of asking questions about her jihad. As the Chairman of the House Intelligence committee at the time, it was incumbent on Rogers to ask those questions.
The pattern raises questions extending well beyond any individual candidate’s religious identity. Religious freedom is an American cornerstone. The issue is whether organizations and political movements with documented Islamist agendas are exploiting America’s openness to advance an ideological project fundamentally at odds with Western democratic values.
Grace can examine the Muslim Brotherhood’s history, its American jihad organizational network, its political strategy and the significance of its growing presence in electoral politics. Where does legitimate political participation end and ideological infiltration begin? And are Americans recognizing the implications before the movement gains even greater influence?
