Is Target Preventing Police Officers From Arresting Shoplifters To Save Its Social Standing? (Guest: Michael Letts)

InVest USA’s Michael Letts believes the store chain may be preventing the law from being carried out to avoid being blasted by consumers.

A new report suggests that a popular store chain may be preventing police officers from doing their job within their stores in an effort to save face with its shoppers.

Per the Epoch Times, Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper noted that the retailer is stopping deputies from apprehending shoplifters in their stores – despite previous requests to cut back criminal activity within their region.

“We don’t tell big retail how to do their jobs, they shouldn’t tell us how to do ours,” Cooper noted on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

He speaks of a recent situation where he set up surveillance to catch shoplifters in the act at stores. However, the company’s head of regional security noted that suspects couldn’t be approached or arrested in-store. “We were told they didn’t want to create a scene inside the store and have people film it and put it on social media. They didn’t want negative press.”

Target had come under fire earlier in the year, facing a potential boycott and losing millions of dollars over carrying LGBT items during a celebration of “pride month.” The retailer came under fire for selling items that some believed weren’t safe for children.

So what happens when a retail giant prevents police from doing their job, despite being asked to do their job? Joining us now to discuss this further is Michael Letts, a law enforcement veteran with over 30 years of experience under his belt. Letts is Founder, President and CEO of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships. His expertise is certainly welcome in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. Does this situation surrounding Target and not allowing police officers to arrest shoplifters in their store sound right to you? Especially after the requests to try and stop them and cut back on crime within their community?
  2. Is it frustrating that Target seems more focused on social media praise rather than actually stopping criminal activity within their store? Is it really that important?
  3. Could thinking like this by various retail chains be part of the reason why teenagers are “running wild” within stores and stealing whatever they like?
  4. What do you think will happen with Target if they continue thinking like this? Will police vent their frustration in their inability to do their jobs, despite the retailer’s request?
