Negotiations appear to be back on the table with Iran after President Trump vows to take Kharg Island. But to what end?
Within just hours of President Donald Trump vowing to hit Iran “very hard” and make an effort to take control of Kharg Island (amongst other oil infrastructure points), he has now changed course and called off strikes against the country, nearing that a deal could be nearing its “final points” – and that’s something Founder and President of the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund, former Mayor of Shiloh David Rubin is watching very closely.
Earlier in the day, Trump warned that the United States “will be hitting Iran VERY HARD TONIGHT,” and also working to deprive Tehran of energy revenues that help fund its military operations. As part of that threat, he also promised to take over the Island, a primary oil-export terminal for Iran.
But a new report suggests that Trump has changed course following these threats, cancelling any further strikes on Iran and potentially moving on “final points” of an agreement between the two countries.
This is the latest effort by Trump to make a deal between the two countries, which had been ongoing for months. And though he insists that the two sides agreed to “both in concept and great detail,” the lack of further information has brought up questions.
And the big one is where this will leave Israel. There is no secret that the relationship between Israel and the United States has waned quite a bit over the past few weeks, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hasn’t been actively taking part in negotiations. And what’s more, Vice President J.D. Vance has been critical of Netanyahu, noting how he “got some things wrong” when it came to asserting the interests of his country that weren’t quite aligned with the United States.
So here we are again, with Trump backing down on a very large threat and promising a deal with Iran is imminent. But is it? And, for that matter, what will become of Israel as a result?
Rubin joins us now to discuss the situation further. Welcome, Mayor Rubin!
Q&A:
- Donald Trump has been promising a deal with Iran for several weeks now. Do you think he’s that much closer to reaching an agreement? Or do you feel the two sides are further apart than they’ve ever been?
- Why did Trump suddenly back down from his threat on Khang Island? Could Iran have been concerned about losing its major oil-export terminal, and reached out to come closer to an agreement?
- Do you believe the two sides will ultimately reach an agreement? Or will it continue on this way for a few more weeks (or even months) as conflict eventually rolls on?
- What about Netanyahu? Where does he stand in all this, and is it concerning that he’s not actively taking part in negotiations?
- J.D. Vance recently made it clear that Netanyahu’s way of thinking doesn’t quite align with the United States. Do you believe Vance has it correct, or is he simply not seeing what Netanyahu is trying to do for Israel?
- What about Hamas? Will the ceasefire continue to hold? Or will that deal possibly come to an end as well?
