Hong Kong Authorities Aren’t Holding Back In Their Pursuit of Exiled Activists and Lawyers (Guest: Nan Su)

The Epoch Times’ Nan Su explains why these warrants were issued, and what it means in terms of law enforcement.

In a startling move earlier this week, Hong Kong has suddenly issued arrest warrants for eight exiled activists and lawyers, believing that they have violated China’s national security law. What’s more, they seem to be offering a great deal of money for their capture.

Authorities believe these suspects have taken part in “collusion with foreign forces,” though details are light at the moment.

Nathan Law, a former legislator and activist who’s on the list and currently living in exile, noted that the charges “are classic examples of abusing the concept of ‘national security,’ pushing its definition to an extreme to suppress dissident voices.” He also made it clear that at no point did he accept foreign government funding.

Hong Kong’s superintendent of national security, Steve Li Kwai-wah, noted that these eight suspects “have encouraged sanctions…to destroy Hong Kong,” adding that “they have committed very versions offenses that endanger national security.”

This is a growing concern, especially considering that China’s national security law has already led to a number of arrests – 260 in fact, with nearly 80 of them leading to conviction.

So is this right, or is more reasoning needed when it comes to these warrants? Joining us now to discuss this further is Nan Su, a senior investigator with The Epoch Times. He brings a wealth of knowledge surrounding actions with China with him, so his expertise is most certainly welcome with this discussion.

Q&A:

  1. What’s your take on these eight warrants that were issued for activists and lawyers? Do you feel they are unnecessary, or part of an agenda on Hong Kong’s part?
  2. Do you believe these eight people are a threat to national security? Or are they simply trying to live out their lives without causing harm?
  3. We’ve seen over 260 cases in which people have been arrested under China’s national law. Would you say that’s an alarming number? Or does it sound about right when it comes to the agenda of the CCP?
  4. Do you believe we’ll see even more orders for arrests? And possibly some extreme actions to bring in these suspects?
  5. Could any legal challenges come from this at all? Or is Hong Kong so loaded with power that it wouldn’t make a difference?
  6. Speaking of what’s going on overseas, you recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final WarTell us more about it and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
  7. Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
