Finally, A State Lawmaker Is Providing Support For Gun Shops and Their Owners – But Will Others Follow Suit? (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

Gun Owners of America spokesman Stephen Willeford explains why Alaska’s latest actions are important for gun shop owners, and private gun owners as well.

It’s not that often that a state government goes out of its way to take care of gun shops and their owners, especially these days. So, when one actually does it, it’s worth noting.

Alaska lawmakers recently passed legislation that will block state and local officials from closing gun stores during disasters that are declared by the local governor. The only way that they’ll be forced to close now is the disaster is so severe, it applies to other businesses.

This follows several other states following a similar bill, and serves as a response to what happened with gun shops following the pandemic – leaving private citizens out in the cold when it came to protecting their homes from potential criminal activities.

The measure also makes note that, in scenarios where a governor may declare a potential emergency, neither they nor any sort of state agencies can issue any sort of orders keeping people from possessing or using guns for personal use. They also cannot limit the sale of guns, ammunition or other weapons.

This is a huge win for gun shops, as well as their owners and private citizens that use firearms. While some lobbyists may argue about the safety factor, the legislation actually serves to protect the rights as provided by the Second Amendment.

Joining us now to talk further about this victory is Stephen Willeford, the spokesman for Gun Owners of America. You may recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise is welcome in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. At a time when so many states are concerned about who can get their hands on a gun, what does Alaska’s recent legislature say to those that believe in the right to bear arms?
  2. Would you say this is a big win for gun shops, especially coming off of what occurred with COVID over the past few years?
  3. Some may argue that this legislation could put more guns on the street. If someone came to you with this argument, how would you respond?
  4. Why do some states keep coming up with restrictive gun laws when they’re likely to be knocked down by the protection provided by the Second Amendment? Do you believe governments will keep trying to create the laws?
  5. Tell us more about your “hero with a gun” incident in 2017, and the importance of being ready against an “active shooter.”
  6. Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
