China Seems To Be Aiming For Claiming Territory Within the South China Sea – But It Could Bring Trouble (Guest: Nan Su)

The Epoch Times’ Nan Su discusses the country’s latest moves, and why it’s something that shouldn’t be ignored.

Over the past year, leader Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party has certainly been making unsettling decisions, particularly with Taiwan and the United States. But now, it could be trying to cause trouble on the South China Sea – mainly by staking claim to it.

According to the AP News, the country has revealed a new map that shows its claim in the area, including contested parts of India and Russia. This has resulted in a number of official objections, though it doesn’t appear to be responding to them. At least, not yet.

One of the most noteworthy examples of this is Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island, which has been claimed as Chinese territory. But per the article, but China and Russia agreed nearly two decades ago that the island would be split.

There are more standoffs as well, including Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and others. And if that’s not enough, according to Independent UK, China actually came very close to creating trouble with a Philippine patrol ship in the area, as they appear to be attempting to enact on its new terms on the map.

A Philippines’ coastguard spokesperson noted, “We condemn the behavior of the Chinese coastguard vessel. They have been violating international law, particularly the collision regulations.”

Joining us now to discuss this further is Nan Su, a senior investigative reporter for The Epoch Times. Nan is an expert in all things China, so his knowledge on the matter should certainly prove worthwhile with this subject.

Q&A:

  1. What do you think prompted China to reveal a new map that shows them (mostly) in command in the South China Sea?
  2. What would you say is the goal of the map? Are they simply threatening smaller regions that they hope to overtake? Are they trying to say something to Taiwan and the other countries?
  3. Is it a bit curious that it’s attempting to lay claim to an island it split with Russia so long ago? Especially since Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin had discussions in the past?
  4. What’s your take on this recent brush with a Philippines boat in the South China Sea? Could China land in big trouble trying to lay claim to areas that simply aren’t theirs?
  5. What does this say about the confidence level of Xi Jinping and Chinese officials? Is it too much for its own good?
  6. Speaking of uneasiness with China, you recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final WarTell us more about it and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
  7. Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
  8. You can visit our official website at http://www.theepochtimes.com. There are also various documentaries available over on Epoch TV.
