China Appears To Be Cutting Back On Reliance With Foreign Technologies – But Will it Literally Cost Them? (Guest: Nan Su)

The Epoch Times’ Nan Su discusses the government’s latest move to disallow iPhones and other foreign-branded devices from being used in office.

Apple is set to reveal a new line of iPhones in the coming week, but it appears one country isn’t going to let its government employees get their hands on them.

China has told its central government agencies that its employees are not allowed to use iPhones or other foreign-branded devices in the office.

Officials did not disclose any reasoning behind the move, but it could possibly be part of an initiative to cut back on usage of foreign technologies – something China has been working on for some time.

The troubled country has been working on trying to boost its own self-reliant technologies, but it has also cited financial troubles, particularly within its property market crisis. This has President Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party concerned, especially when it comes to its continuing to look strong compared to other countries.

With us now to discuss this further is Nan Su, a senior investigative reporter for The Epoch Times. Nan is an expert in all things Chinese culture, so his expertise will certainly be welcome with this matter.

Q&A:

  1. First off, is this ban of iPhones and other “foreign” technology really necessary? Is this a decision by the government to push out its own technology?
  2. Is China simply trying to flex its muscles compared to other countries? Is it really trying to push that its technology is far more advanced than the rest of the world?
  3. Will this have any effect on Apple and other companies with tech that isn’t being used by Chinese government? We’ve already seen a slight dip in Apple’s shares thus far.
  4. China is currently seeing some monetary problems, particularly with the property market. Will trying to boost its own technology help at all, or does it just make the government look a bit more desperate?
  5. Where do you see China’s economy going in the months ahead?
  6. Will it continue to try and push forward to keep strong ties with its allies?
  7. Speaking of uneasiness with China, you recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final WarTell us more about it and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
  8. Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
