The ATF Is Once Again Sidestepping the Second Amendment With a New Background Check Rule (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

The spokesman for the Gun Owners of America explains why the ATF is once again violating the rights of private gun owners.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) continue to make trouble for private gun owners, thanks to a new rule that specifically sidesteps the Second Amendment.

Under President Joe Biden, the group has launched a new rule that forces a “universal” background check on any firearm that is sold. In other words, with this in play, people will now be required to complete a Universal Background Registration Check and possibly even wait through a prolonged period of time before they get a firearm.

The rule now requires a Federal Firearm License (FFL) alongside the background check, virtually doing away with any sort of private firearm transactions.

One of the gun groups looking to go after the ATF over the rule is the Gun Owners of America, and today, its spokesman, Stephen Willeford, joins us to discuss the matter further. You may recall that Willeford was the “hero with a gun” back in the 2017 Sutherland Springs incident, and he recently co-wrote a book on the subject. His expertise will certainly prove useful in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. How specifically does the ATF’s new rule violate the Second Amendment? Mainly with sidestepping its rights for private gun sales, or something else?
  2. Why does the ATF – and for that matter, President Biden – seem so hellbent on violating the Second Amendment? Are they really that concerned about safety, or is this more about keeping an eye on gun sales?
  3. Is requiring a Federal Firearm License (FFL) a step too far when it comes to what’s being asked from this rule? Won’t that result in a prolonged waiting period?
  4. Do you believe the Gun Owners of America will be able to successfully sue the ATF and knock the rule down, as others have managed to do in the past? If so, how do you believe the ATF will react?
  5. What is the best solution, in your belief, when it comes to dialing down the number of shooting events in America?
  6. You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
  7. Where can people find your book?
    1. You can purchase the book here on Amazon, both in paperback and Kindle format.
  8. Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
    1. My official website is http://www.stephenwilleford.com. You can read more about Gun Owners of America at https://www.gunowners.org/.
