As Massachusetts Prepares Its New Gun Violence Reduction Bill, The Rights of Private Gun Owners Come Into Question

A representative for the Second Amendment Foundation explains how chaos could potentially ensue from the new bill.

As violent acts continue to rise in Boston, the Democratic State Senate is looking to make changes to Massachusetts’ gun laws as a whole – but it could provide massive backlash on private gun owners.

The bill, set to be introduced to the Senate later this week, is set to “sensibly address firearm violence through effective reform,” mainly hunting after “ghost guns” and preventing guns from being improperly marketed to younger users. Backers of the bill believe it will update “state laws to reflect new technologies and trends, and makes the Commonwealth’s residents even safer without infringing on the rights of lawful gun owners.”

But some gun rights groups are up in the arms over the bill, as it could still infringe on said rights. Jim Wallace, executive director of the Gun Owners Action League, called the bill “tremendously devious.”

Speaking with the Boston Herald, Wallace continued, “The problem with voicing our concerns was we didn’t know what our concerns would be until we saw the bill. We voiced our concerns about the House bill but the Senate bill created a whole new set of concerns.”

The bill would not only ban the use of 3D printers with the exception of those that are licensed firearms manufacturers, but would also require gunsmiths to serialize gun components – even “before they exist.”

In addition, the provisions would ban the AR-15 entirely, a weapon that some advocates believe could turn law-abiding owners into felons – a poor classification. Not to mention that towns would be able to decide if guns could be carried into municipal owned buildings.

So are people so sure about that “infringing” part of the bill? Joining us now to discuss the matter further is a representative for the Second Amendment Foundation, a group that firmly believes in the right for everyone to bear arms. Their expertise will be useful in this discussion.

Q&A:

  1. It seems with each passing week, a state steps up with a new bill in some kind of effort to diminish the rights of private gun owners. Is this something you believe we’ll see more of in 2024?
  2. Have you had a chance to look over Boston’s amendment bill? Do you believe their stance that they aren’t “infringing on the rights of lawful gun owners”?
  3. What do you think the big problem is when it comes to the new rules they intend to introduce? The fact that it likely won’t have an effect on the growing violence within its various cities? Or something else?
  4. Why do you believe so many states are dedicated to stopping people from carrying firearms into buildings? Are they that concerned that people with guns pose that kind of a threat, even with Concealed-Carry licenses?
  5. Do you think things will get better or worse for Massachusetts as the argument over this bill continues? Could we possibly see lawsuits from it?
  6. What argument would you have for someone that doesn’t feel safe around someone that practices Concealed-Carry?
  7. Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation?
