In the face of people still questioning the response time of the police officers in the Uvalde shooting, Alabama’s department has reacted quickly to keep a deadly situation of their own from unfolding.
Earlier this week, a man attempted to break into an Alabama elementary school. Someone notified the police, and a local sheriff went to confront the 32-year old man. After getting into a physical altercation with him, several other officers arrived, resulting in the shooting and death of the would-be shooter. As a result, the 34 children inside the school were kept safe.
“Our primary concern was just making sure that someone who was not authorized to be in our building does not get into it and that our kids are safe,” said Tony Reddick, who serves as superintendent for the Gadsden city school district.
Etowah county sheriff Jonathan Horton added, “The school resource officer did exactly what should be done, he went straight to the threat, confronted it and dealt with it.”
Joining us now to discuss this matter is Michael Letts, a pro-police representative who serves as founder and CEO for InVest USA. It’s an organization that provides bulletproof vests to officers across the country, through various sponsorships and charitable organizations.
- What does this Alabama police situation say about the effectiveness of officers, especially in the wake of what some are deeming “Uvalde controversy”?
- Between this and Tulsa, several officers are out to prove that they truly belong within their respective communities. Where do you think the initial doubt comes from with their performance? The media? People within the communities?
- Response time seems to be an important factor in stopping potential shootings such as this. Do you think police are getting better prepared for situations like these? Is there anything more you think they can do?
- Do you think situations such as this should show the government the importance of supporting officers, rather than President Biden’s plan to try and get specific weapons banned?
- How would you support officers like this in the field? More funding? More supplies, like the bulletproof vests InVest provide?
