Cosmetic Entrepreneur Natalie Plain Explains #GirlPower Is the Ticket for the Oscars
In the beauty industry, everything changes quickly. The masks are off, and ‘war paint’ is back on. This will be especially true for Hollywood’s biggest night of the year: The Oscars. Cosmetic entrepreneur Natalie Plain talks beauty prep for Acadamy Award hosts, presenters, and Oscar winners. Natalie says since we’ve just come off of two years of wearing masks, seeing no lips, the focus this year will be on the eyebrows. Welcome, Natalie.
Q&A:
- It’s a first for the Academy – three female hosts with three different looks. What is your recommendation?
Answer: Regina Hall – I love Regina’s bold brows. She deposits that perfect amount of pigment in her brows to make them pop. She plays up her luscious lips in a subtle way but with color and consistency.
Wanda Sykes – I love that Wanda plays up her eyes and cheeks. She has beautiful cheekbones, her eyes are expressive, and her signature beauty. Her skin is flawless too!
Amy Schummer – I think Amy uses color in so many subtle ways that present her as a natural girl next door beauty. Nothing is overwhelming. She knows how to use color on her blonde eyebrows to frame her face. Her lips and cheeks showcase a gentle use of pinks, and her eyes pull you in with purpose and a pop of mascara.
- How has beauty changed from pandemic to now?
Answer: Beauty post-pandemic is a big runway full of all sorts of looks.
Some are going hard with bold brows and lips, while others choose to move slower by still focusing on their brows and their eyes. Brows, mascara, and lashes are now the “It thing.”
People having to wear masks has fed these two areas of the face (brows & eyes) for so long that they are here to stay.
The overall beauty landscape is very bright, but color has become a Universal tone and less about wild colors from the past.
- What are some of the best spring looks for the hosts and presenters?
Answer: The Spring looks are fresh and floral. It’s a dawning of a new age of pinks and a touch of bronzer!
One of my favorite young designers is Chloe Pearl. Her new lingerie line features a Marie Antoinette approach that is empowering and very feminine.
It’s fun to watch women getting back into beauty and leaning into fancy apparel and less about comfort wear. Of course, we all love to wear sweats on occasions, but high heels and dresses are enormous bumps for the soul.
- Hosting won’t be the only thing back to the Oscars ceremony this year. All the parties will be back. What is your thought on makeup for the occasion?
Answer: I believe big beautiful brows will take center stage. Men and women understand the natural beauty of a bold brow. Next up is shiny glowy skin with a hint of color on the cheeks and lids. Finally, the lips are generally a statement piece for certain people. I predict about half will go bold with rich reds while half will lean towards nudes and pinks.
- How has beauty and makeup changed in the past two years?
Answer: The most significant change is seeing the importance of sustainability and using less wasteful products in terms of packaging while also delivering on its promise. The brow game has everyone stepping up in terms of our beauty routines.
Highlighting healthy skin, and treating your hair with masks. Lips receiving a new twist of a healthy approach
Less dark or bright colors on the eyes. I think both will make their way back as we embrace the 90’s beauty style.
ADDITIONAL: Natalie can work with the entertainment editor on-air to show different spring looks for the red carpet and after-parties.
