Gasoline thefts are on the rise due to rising gas prices, according to police Guest: Michael Letts

Interview guest Police Officer Michael Letts

Police report an increase in thefts of gasoline as gas prices soar.

The thefts include thieves siphoning or puncturing gas tanks to drain the gas, as well as a rise in drive-off gas thefts. Then, thieves fill up and take off! This is similar to when restaurant prices rise, and we see an increase in ‘Dine and Dash’ thefts.

But fuel thefts are not limited to individual vehicles. For example, a family-owned Houston gas station was a victim of a 1000 gallon theft of diesel fuel by siphoning from an underground tank using a minivan with a secret trap door. The loss was estimated at $5000.

Here to discuss this new trend is police officer Michael Letts, CEO o InVest USA, a charity that raises funds to provide bulletproof vests for police officers in communities where police have been defunded.

Q&A:

1.) With law enforcement reporting a noticeable increase in gas theft incidents, is this having a negative impact on their job performance and on a crime rate increase?

A.) Anytime there is a dramatic rise in even petty crime, it strains an already overtaxed force. Gas thefts are incredibly tedious in that the evidence is usually combusted, more challenging to get fingerprints, etc…..thus becoming more time-consuming to investigate. Violent crime rates are at an all-time high. Officer morale is at an all-time low due to the Defund the Police movement. Officer firings are unprecedentedly high due to some refusing the force mandate. All of this contributes to an already overstressed judicial system.

2.) What is causing this increase in gas thefts?

A.) Failed Energy policies that have changed America from being Energy Independent to being Energy Dependent on foreign governments such as Russia, Iran, and Venezuela….enemies of the United States.

3.)What impact does it have on law enforcement and their duties?

A.) Law Enforcement Agencies are budgeted for gas utilization in the prior year. If gas prices increase by three-fold percent ($1.89 per gallon to over $5.00 per gallon), they cannot patrol as often, decreasing safety and crime prevention in the community. This has a considerable effect on the increase in crime in the community.

4.) What can be done to help our First Responders and Law Enforcement Officers reduce crime in our Communities?

A.) Ensure they are respected and appreciated.

Ensure they have the necessary protective gear and bulletproof vests.

Promote Fuel Energy policies that ensure First Responders have what they need to patrol and protect our communities.

5.) Please tell us about your work at InVest USA and where we may learn more about your charity.

A.) www.investusa.org.
