Spokesman Stephen Willeford explains how Michelle Lujan Grisham is getting everything wrong with her decision – and why legal action is necessary.
Right before the weekend, Democratic New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham used a public health emergency to ban the right to carry firearms for most citizens within the city of Albuquerque. The ban is for a 30 day period, though Grisham is considering making it longer.
The move has been met with harsh criticism from many, including various Albuquerque police officers fearing violence, as well as the state’s own Attorney General, who has refused to provide support for the lawsuits that are starting to come against her.
One of those lawsuits comes from the Gun Owners of America, who were amongst the first to file in the name of the Constitution. “If a power-hungry left-wing governor can do this to your God-given rights and get away with it, it will only be a matter of time before every anti-gun governor in the nation – and Joe Biden – follows suit to rip the Second Amendment to pieces,” the group noted in a press release.
Joining us now to discuss this matter further is Stephen Willeford, a spokesman for the group. You may recall that Willeford was the “hero with a gun” back in the 2017 Sutherland Springs incident, and he recently co-wrote a book on the subject. His expertise will certainly prove useful in this matter.
Q&A:
- What are your thoughts on the actions of Grisham? Do you believe she’s going too far, especially considering how the Second Amendment is supposed to be protecting the right to bear arms?
- Grisham has since taken a stand, saying she enacted the ban for the sake of the people. But judging by reactions, she’s actually working against the people. Do you believe she has a problem seeing that?
- What do you think will come from the lawsuits that have been filed against Grisham? Could a reversal of her ban be imminent?
- This is the latest attempt by politicians to try and enact some sort of weapons ban that goes against the Second Amendment. Why do you believe they just don’t “get it” when it comes to the rights provided by the Constitution?
- You’ve always discussed how you believe Constitutional-Carry (or concealed carry, as some deem it) is an effective solution for keeping people safe, particularly during “active shooter” events. Why do you think that’s the case, and what argument would you have for someone that notes otherwise?
- You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
