Gun Owners of America spokesperson Stephen Willeford talks about the group’s battle with the measure, and why Oregon should give it a second look.
As Oregon officials continues to try and dictate the gun rights of its citizens through the controversial Measure 114, another judge has stepped up to prevent it from taking effect yet again.
Following a previous block to put the law into motion, The Hill reports that a second judge has specifically stopped a gun control law that would ban high-capacity magazines from going into effect, issuing a preliminary injunction.
“That the large capacity magazine bans promote public safety is mere speculation,” Judge Robert Raschio noted on the ruling. “The court cannot sustain restraint on constitutional right on mere speculation that the restriction could promote public safety.”
The Gun Owners of America are just one of the groups that filed a suit against Measure 114, which would ban the sale of high-capacity magazines, as well as strict permit requirements for firearms. It would also limit off-duty police officers, preventing them from carrying their firearm with them.
The lawsuit notes that Measure 114 clearly violates Oregon’s constitution, which includes the right to bear arms.
Here to speak with us now on this ongoing matter is Stephen Willeford, a spokesman for the Gun Owners of America. You may recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise is certainly welcome in this matter.
Q&A:
- What do you think Oregon is trying to accomplish with this measure? Do you believe they may be trying to appeal to President Joe Biden’s recent effort to ban “assault weapons” from the United States?
- Why do you think it would go against its own constitution in an attempt to pass this measure?
- Do you think it’s a bit concerning that the state didn’t even give off-duty police officers any consideration when it came to them carrying their firearms? What if they’re put into a situation when they need to potentially stop an active shooter event?
- Should the lawsuit be successful, do you think Oregon will go back and attempt to balance this Measure to make it a bit more fair? Or do you believe officials will continue to try and pass it as is?
- As a “hero with a gun” who has seen an active shooter situation first-hand, what can you tell us about the importance of Constitutional-Carry, and citizens stepping up to stop them before they can hurt innocent people?
- Where can we learn more about you, as well as the Gun Owners of America?
