Upcoming Power Blackouts In the UK Are the Latest Results Of Its Mishandling of Critical Energy (Guest: Guy Mitchell)

Author Guy Mitchell discusses power issues that will affect millions of consumers this holiday season, and what it could potentially mean for the long-term.

Following Russia’s shutdown of the Nord Steam 1 pipeline that cuts off Europe from a big chunk of its natural gas supply (thanks to its ongoing war with Ukraine), the country is about to feel the crunch over the course of this holiday season.

A new report from Fox Business reveals that the National Grid’s Electricity System Operator (or ESO for short) announced that it’s working on establishing “precautionary measures” to keep gas supplies flowing from the end of this month through March 31, 2023. However, during that time, it has warned citizens that supplies could easily run short, and, as a result, power blackouts lasting up to three hours could be the result.

“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine means that overall, this is likely to be a challenging winter for energy supply throughout Europe,” the operator noted in a recent press statement.

“There may be days when it was cold (therefore likely high demand), with low levels of wind (reduced available generation), where there is the potential to need to interrupt supply to some customers for limited periods of time.” That said, it has promised that the blackouts will be “managed and controlled.”

It’s also advised the public to avoid using excessive heat and limiting its power usage during peak hours.

Whether this will tie in to a long-term solution is anyone’s guess, as Europe is still trying to find a viable power solution that doesn’t result in massive layoffs or power blackouts that could very well last longer than a few hours.

Here to speak with us now about the matter is Guy Mitchell, the author of Global Warming: The Great Deception – The Triumph of Dollars and Politics Over Science and Why You Should Care. He recently wrote an op-ed titled The Deindustrialization of the European Union which delves deeply into this subject, so his expertise is certainly welcome here.

Q&A:

  1. While some may commend the ESO for giving warnings about potential blackouts, do you think there was a way that they could be avoided? Or was this going to come to a head given Europe’s current situation with natural gas and power?
  2. What do you think the effects of a three-hour blackout will be for UK citizens? Is there anything you think they can do to prepare in advance?
  3. In your op-ed The Deindustrialization of the European Union, you discuss how the EU “traded long term prosperity for short-term political gain.” What do you believe was the most crucial mistake the country made when it came to putting this plan in motion?
  4. Do you believe EU can find a viable energy solution over the next few months, or do you believe matters will get worse, possibly leading to higher gas rates and possibly more blackouts? Could we also see additional layoffs and closures of plants?
  5. Both EU and President Joe Biden seem to be pushing for more viable energy solutions, but that means higher rates for consumers, as well as shutting down traditional energy methods that have proven to work well for years. In the long run, who truly benefits from this? Wouldn’t it have been better off to just leave things be or, at the very least, find a more viable energy solution?
  6. Why do you think countries aren’t paying attention to what you deem the “real science” surrounding man-made global warming?
  7. Tell us more about your latest book, Global Warming: The Great Deception – The Triumph of Dollars and Politics Over Science and Why You Should Care, and why it’s such a relevant read right now in the face of a potential energy crisis.
  8. Where can consumers find out more about your book, Global Warming: The Great Deception?

It’s available for purchase on Amazon here, and there’s also a Kindle version available here.
