With the Passing of a Bill Banning the Sale of Assault Rifles, The U.S. House of Representatives May Have Waged an Unlikely War With Private Gun Owners (Guest: Second Amendment)

In an effort to make a “crucial” movement against the growing number of active shooter incidents in the U.S., the Democrat-led House of Representatives recently voted on – and passed – a bill that would call for the ban of certain assault rifles within this country.

The bill passed narrowly in a vote of 217 to 213, with a pair of Republicans voting alongside most of the Democrats in the House. The bill has also gotten approval from President Joe Biden, who believes banning the weapons is the answer and hopes the Senate will “move quickly to get this bill to my desk.” That said, it still has a ways to go before it becomes law.

Still, the idea that such a law exists has put several pro-gun ownership groups into upheaval, as well as private gun owners. To discuss this in further detail, we welcome a spokesperson from the 2nd Amendment Foundation to provide their perspective on the matter.

Q&A:

  1. On a scale of 1 to 10, how devastating is this bill when it comes to private gun ownership?
  2. Could a ban of certain assault rifles in this country truly be that effective? Especially since so many illegal weapons are still sold on the market?
  3. What do you think would be the effect left on private gun owners if the bill manages to pass through the Senate?
  4. Do you believe that concealed-carry is a more effective method for stopping active shooters than the ban of weapons? Why do you think the government won’t look more into this initiative?
  5. If you had the chance to draw up a bill in an attempt to slow the active shooter events in this country, what direction would you likely take it in?
  6. Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation and its members?
  7. Those interested can visit http://www.saf.org/.
