What Does President Joe Biden’s Cancellation of $5.8 Billion In Student Loans Say About the State of Today’s Economics? (Guest: Brett Winterble)

After an outcry for what seemed like months on end, the U.S. Department of Education has made the decision to cancel about $5.8 billion in outstanding student loans across 560,000 borrowers. It acts as the largest single loan forgiveness action taken by the government to date. However, it looks like it’s focused on anyone that attended schools operated by Corinthian Colleges, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2015 and has since closed down.

This looks to resolve several lawsuits filed against the schools, whom Vice President Kamala Harris once deemed “deceptive” with its “false advertising and recruiting,” amongst other allegations.

That said, there are still millions of borrowers that have yet to see any level of this relief, leaving them wondering where they stand in this day and age – especially in the face of an ever-growing inflation amidst high gas and home prices.

Joining us now is Brett Winterble, a spokesperson from Birch Gold to discuss the state of the economy in the face of this large – and some believe necessary – student loan forgiveness.

Q&A:

  1. In the face of this tremendous student loan cancellation, where do you think the U.S. Department of Education will go from here? Will they attempt to cancel more debt, or will the program slow down a bit?
  2. Some believe there’s a level of unfairness where some debts have been cancelled and others continue to be outstanding in terms of student loans. Do you believe any sort of balance can be found?
  3. Could this serve as a warning sign for how some colleges recruit students? Harris’ statement of how some rely on “false advertising and recruiting” seems pretty damning.
  4. If the Biden administration is unable to clear additional debts away, could that have an effect on how voting goes later this year? Or is it too soon to tell?
  5. What would you recommend for those still trying to square away those debts? Birch Gold deals in a number of tangible assets, including gold and silver, so do you think those would be worth investing in?
  6. Where can we learn more about Birch Gold Group, gold IRAs, and other services provided by Birch Gold.
