Dems Feel Impeachy: Midterm Wins for Democrats will mean Third Bite at the Impeachment Apple
If Democrats win the House in November, another Trump impeachment is all but inevitable. The likelihood of conviction and removal are a much murkier question. Political commentator and RAV television host of Ringside Politics, Jeff Crouere believes Democrats would likely use impeachment primarily as political theater, just as they did during Trump’s first term. But this time, Republicans could find themselves sailing into much more treacherous political waters in the second half of Trump’s second term.

In his latest Townhall commentary, “If Democrats Win, Trump Will Be Impeached Again,” Crouere argues that Democrats will have plenty of incentive to launch another impeachment campaign if they regain control of the House. Yet he does not believe the Senate would ever convict Trump. Conviction would require 67 senators, making removal from office an extraordinarily high hurdle.
Still, “unlikely” is not the same as “impossible” and Trump needs some wins.
This will become increasingly important as the 2026 midterms approach and then as post mortems are delivered.
Trump’s political strength has always been central to Republican unity. If his support remains high, Republican senators have little incentive to break with him. But what if his approval continues to deteriorate? What if economic conditions remain disappointing—or worsen? What if Republican senators begin calculating that defending Trump carries greater political risk than distancing themselves from him? This is something to guard against.
A third impeachment will be fraught with more political peril than the first two. Even some Republicans, like Senator John Cornyn, are indicating that.
The ingredients for what Crouere describes as a potential perfect storm are straightforward: Democrats controlling the House, an aggressive impeachment campaign, declining presidential approval, economic frustration and Republican senators facing pressure to protect their own political futures.
None of that means Trump would be convicted. In fact, Crouere expects another impeachment to end much like the previous ones: with plenty of political theater but no removal from office.
But conservatives should not confuse today’s political reality with what tomorrow’s political reality might look like.
Crouere can explain why Democrats are likely to pursue another impeachment if they win the House, why conviction remains highly improbable, and why Republicans should nevertheless be concerned about the possibility if Trump’s political support weakens and economic conditions do not improve.
He can also discuss the treacherous political waters Republicans could face if Democrats control the House and Trump enters the next impeachment fight politically weakened.
The next impeachment may be theater. The danger is assuming it could never become something more.
