Ex-Traditions: Muslim Brotherhood-Connected Attorney General Politicizing and Weaponizing Extraditions

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has very disturbing connections to the Muslim Brotherhood through various groups under that umbrella and who many believe warrants a terrorist organization designation. Ellison is seeking the extradition of ICE agent Christian Castro from Texas to Minnesota, where Castro faces criminal charges stemming from an alleged January shooting in Minneapolis. Ellison has sued Texas Gov. Greg Abbott after Texas declined to surrender Castro, escalating the dispute into a showdown over interstate extradition and state sovereignty. Castro has been charged with four counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and falsely reporting a crime.
Harden believes Abbott should respond with a simple question: If Minnesota expects Texas to honor its extradition request, why isn’t New York honoring Louisiana’s request for Dr. Margaret Carpenter?
Carpenter, a New York physician, faces prosecution in Louisiana over allegations that she mailed chemical-abortion drugs to a Louisiana woman. Louisiana sought her extradition, but New York Gov. Kathy Hochul rejected the request, relying on New York’s shield-law protections. Carpenter now faces another Louisiana investigation involving an alleged shipment of abortion pills.
The dispute also raises the largely overlooked federal dimension: the Comstock Act. Federal law specifically addresses the mailing and interstate transportation of drugs or medicines intended for producing an abortion. While the legal question turns in part on the sender’s intent and does not mean every shipment of mifepristone or misoprostol is automatically criminal, prosecutors can invoke the statute when its requirements are satisfied.
That creates an extraordinary political and constitutional question for Abbott: Shouldn’t Louisiana receive the same cooperation from New York that Minnesota is demanding from Texas?
And Abbott could take the argument further by publicly challenging Ellison over his controversial history of alleged connections to individuals and organizations associated with the Muslim Brotherhood—connections Ellison has disputed—and asking whether Minnesota’s attorney general is applying a consistent standard of interstate justice.
Newman and Harden can discuss why this increasingly tangled confrontation involving ICE, abortion drugs, the Comstock Act, extradition, state sovereignty and Ellison’s controversial political associations could become a much bigger national story.
