Gaga Over Occult: Celebrity Culture Continues Using Mind Control to Mesmerize Young Audiences
For decades, the idea that intelligence agencies, record executives and powerful cultural gatekeepers could manipulate public sentiment through celebrities was dismissed as paranoid conspiracy theory. Consider Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift. Gaga has spent much of her career deliberately blurring the lines between religious, occult and demonic imagery. Her videos and performances have incorporated Catholic iconography, ritualistic imagery, blood, possession, Baphomet-like symbolism and provocative treatments of biblical figures. Her “Judas” video, for example, deliberately combines Christian imagery with sexuality and religious transgression.
Swift has developed her own increasingly occult-coded visual vocabulary, from witchcraft imagery and cloaked figures to masks, horns, ritual-like staging and references to witch hunts. Her Willow imagery has been interpreted as witchcraft, while her “Karma” video features a horned red mask that viewers have associated with demonic imagery. Even former Boyzone singer Shane Lynch, a Christian, publicly accused Swift of incorporating Satanic rituals into her performances.
The obvious response from defenders is that none of this means anything. Gaga and Swift aren’t Satanists, we’re told—they’re merely artists using Satanic or occult optics. The symbols are artistic. The rituals are theatrical. The imagery is metaphorical. And therein lies the fascinating question Syrett can explore: At what point does the insistence that the symbolism “doesn’t really mean anything” become an argument for its effectiveness rather than its innocence?
From a biblical perspective, that defense is hardly reassuring. Scripture repeatedly warns about deception, temptation and the power of appearances. Satan doesn’t exactly advertise himself by walking onstage and announcing, “I’m Satan.” The more sophisticated form of deception is making darkness look entertaining, fashionable, harmless—or merely artistic.
Syrett can connect today’s celebrity culture to the claims he investigated in Tales from the Rock & Roll Twilight Zone, asking whether the mechanisms of psychological manipulation have disappeared—or simply evolved. If earlier generations had plausible deniability, today’s cultural programming may be hiding in plain sight.
And Gaga and Swift aren’t the only examples.
