Candace Canceled: Has Refusal to Question the Charlie Kirk Investigation Made Some Conservatives Act Like Liberals?
The conservative movement has rarely turned on one of its own as quickly as it has turned on Candace Owens. Once celebrated as one of the movement’s most effective communicators, Owens now finds herself under fire from many of the same voices that previously elevated her platform. Dave Hodges, host of The CommonSense Show podcast, believes the story is bigger than whether people like or dislike Owens. It raises a more fundamental question: When does healthy skepticism become forbidden territory?

Candace Owens has generated controversy on a wide range of subjects, alienating former allies along the way. But one issue, in particular, continues to fuel the divide: her ongoing investigation into the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Her persistence has placed her at odds with many figures associated with Turning Point USA, where there appears to be little appetite for revisiting questions surrounding the killing or publicly engaging her claims.
Hodges is quick to point out that agreeing with Candace Owens is not the issue. He does not endorse every conclusion she reaches or every argument she makes. What concerns him is the increasingly common tendency to dismiss inconvenient questions, simply because of who’s asking them, without seriously examining the evidence or reasoning behind those questions. Whether Owens is ultimately right, wrong, or somewhere in between, should conservatives reject her arguments solely because of who she is, or should they evaluate the facts on their own merits?
The reaction also raises broader concerns about intellectual consistency. Conservatives have long criticized legacy media and political institutions for discouraging scrutiny and labeling skeptics as conspiracy theorists rather than engaging their arguments. If that same instinct is now emerging within conservative circles, is the movement abandoning one of its own core principles?
Hodges can discuss why the Charlie Kirk case continues to generate questions, what Owens has presented that deserves examination, and whether Turning Point USA’s leadership has adequately addressed the concerns being raised. He can also explore the growing divide between loyalty to institutions and loyalty to evidence, and why emotionally charged disagreements often crowd out meaningful debate.
Rather than asking audiences to embrace every claim Owens makes, Hodges argues for something far simpler: intellectual curiosity. Whether Owens’ critics are justified or overly dismissive is precisely the conversation many conservatives appear unwilling to have—and that, according to Hodges, is the real story.
